PETALING JAYA: Harimau Malaya have sharpened their claws ahead of their fixture against New Zealand on Monday after a 1-1 draw against Auckland FC yesterday.
National team head coach Pau Marti Vicente believes the team held their own against the A-League club at the Go Media Stadium in Auckland and expects a similar match against the All Whites at North Harbour Stadium on Monday.
“I believe we had a good game against Auckland FC. They are a very strong new club with investments made in their players.
“It was a good test for us especially since we are going to play against New Zealand and we’re expecting a similar game, where it’s physical, fast-paced, and high intensity,” said Vicente.
Auckland’s Francis de Vries gave the hosts the lead in the 25th minute before Finnish-Malaysian midfielder Nooa Laine equalised in the 59th minute.
“In the first half, we conceded the goal because of a deflection, but I think we competed with them well.
“I’m very happy with the commitment shown by the players, it’s good for them to play these kinds of games to serve as a test before Monday’s match,” said Vicente.
The fixture was also a good chance for Vicente to field the youngsters in the squad as he made nine changes during half-time.
“In the second half, we tried to make some changes so many players got the chance to at least play for 45 minutes.
“In total we played 22 players and I’m happy with their performance.
“Even though we did not play the full 90 minutes, we will have Saturday to have some recovery sessions with lower intensity.
“We’re planning to have a good session on Sunday (tomorrow) to prepare us for the important match against New Zealand on Monday,” he said.
New Zealand will be coming to the match in good spirits after winning 3-0 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Tahiti yesterday.
