KL hope to settle RM1mil in arrears by end of the month

PETALING JAYA: New Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) president Syed Yazid Syed Omar is committed to settling the salary arrears that have plagued the club in recent seasons.

Syed Yazid, who took over the president’s role last week, said RM1mil in arrears will hopefully be settled by the end of the month.

“The first thing the players asked for was to settle their salary arrears. So hopefully, with the funds coming in from the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL), we can settle RM1mil of debt for the team by the end of the month.

“For this season, the team are owed three-and-a-half months of wages, we will try to settle it by next month as we have also asked for sponsorships from the corporate sector,” said Syed Yazid.

With the new leadership at KLFA, Syed Yazid hinted at new sponsorship deals that will be coming to the club.

“At the moment I can’t say exactly who the sponsors are, but verbally there are sponsors that want to come on board.

“With what they’re bringing, we can sustain the team for the whole season,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur patron and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed confidence in the new KLFA leadership and is optimistic that the club will benefit with Syed Yazid at the helm, especially in terms of their finances.

Fahmi said the club have the potential to be among the top five teams in the Super League.

“Honestly, if managed well, I believe Kuala Lumpur can be among the top five. We will learn from the past and work harder going forward.

“It won’t be easy because there are a number of aspects in the management and good governance that will need to be improved.

“But if KLFA and the club are managed well, I am confident it will be reflected in the team’s quality of play on the field,” said Fahmi.
