(Reuters) - Jean-Louis Gasset has been appointed manager of Montpellier, the club where he spent most of his playing days and began his managerial career, the Ligue 1 club said on Tuesday.

Montpellier sacked Michel Der Zakarian on Sunday after their 5-0 home defeat by Olympique de Marseille, which left the club bottom of the standings, with one win from their opening eight games.

Gasset, who had announced his retirement when leaving his role as interim manager at Marseille at the end of last season, will take charge at Montpellier for the third time. His first game will be at home to Toulouse on Sunday.

The 70-year-old was sacked in January as Ivory Coast manager after his side's poor showing in the Africa Cup of Nations group stage. They scraped through as the last lucky losers before going on to win the tournament.
