PETALING JAYA: Scoring 16 goals so far in this season’s Super League is an impressive feat for Bergson da Silva, yet it takes a backseat to the success of his team, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

The 33-year-old Brazilian striker reached this milestone with a brace in JDT’s commanding 3-0 victory over Selangor at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium on Sunday.

Despite his remarkable personal achievements, da Silva remains firm that his top priority is on JDT’s victories.

“I am very happy to deliver this win for the team because we all worked so hard to stay on top,” said Da Silva, who emerged as the top goalscorer in the 2022 season with 29 goals.

“For me, my goal tally comes second, as JDT’s victories in every match are what matter the most, and I’m happy to contribute.”

Da Silva’s standout performances include hattricks against Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu, demonstrating his prowess on the field.

With upcoming fixtures against Negri Sembilan on Friday and Perak on Nov 10, Da Silva has a prime opportunity to add to his goal tally, especially given his strong record against the Deer, where he previously netted two goals.

JDT have extended their lead over Selangor in the tournament, comfortably topping the team standings with 34 points.

Selangor hold the second place with 26 points, followed by Sabah in third with 20 points.

Da Silva was relieved that they were able to prove JDT’s status as the top team in the league.

“The match against Selangor was not easy, as they have strong players, and we struggled to break through their defence,” said Da Silva.

“Selangor have always been a tough competitor, but we have proved that we’re still at the top in the Super League competition.”
