GEORGE TOWN: Penang will replace Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli (pic) with a new head coach, ending weeks of speculation about his status with the Panthers.
In a statement, the Penang board of directors said that the decision was made during a meeting on Oct 21 to discuss the future direction of the club’s management following an unsatisfactory performance so far in this season’s Super League.
“As a result of the board meeting, a decision was made to replace the head coach of the Penang team with a coach who has more experience in the league to improve the performance and competitiveness of the club,” the statement read.
The board expressed appreciation for Akmal’s efforts and dedication and said that since he still has a contract with Penang, he will continue in another role under the club’s umbrella.
The board added that several head coach candidates have already been identified, with contract discussions beginning on October 21.
According to the statement, the new head coach’s name will be announced soon, pending final contract details.
The club explained that the Malaysian Football League (MFL) have been informed about the situation, and approval has been granted regarding the interim arrangement.
Following this decision, Penang will be temporarily managed by assistant head coach Mat Saiful Mohamad, with support from technical director Merzagua Abderrazak.
The players are encouraged to fully support both individuals in leading the team, and the club expressed gratitude for the continuous support of the fans.
The 43-year-old coach’s position had been a topic of discussion due to rumours of his potential departure following Penang’s disappointing performances in recent matches.
These rumours intensified when he was absent during their match against Sabah at the City Stadium here on Oct 25, where the team suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat.
This loss marked the third consecutive defeat for Penang, who have played 13 matches so far with only two wins, five draws, and six losses, placing them in 11th position in the standings with just 11 points. — Bernama
