Hitman Aguero out to be a hit in midfield

SEPANG: The name Sergio Aguero is often associated with goals and flair.

There is the former Argentinian international who is revered for his goalscoring feats with Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and the Albiceleste. And his namesake is Malaysia’s naturalised player who is noted as one of the top goal poachers in the Super League.

But now, the Malaysian Aguero could feature in a new role for the Harimau Malaya in the upcoming international friendlies.

The 30-year-old Pahang hitman revealed that he has been operating in midfield during their two days of training at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya.

Aguero, who became a naturalised Malaysian player in 2022, said he wants to show his versatility in the two friendlies against Laos in Bangkok tomorrow and India in Hyderabad on Nov 18.

“I’ve always been able to play in several positions. I can play as a striker, second striker or attacking midfielder. Coach Pau (Marti Vicente) has been using me in midfield during training sessions,” said Aguero, who has 10 caps with Malaysia and two goals.

“I’m game to take on the midfield role in the friendlies and show what I can do.”

Aguero said the two games are important to the team, especially in their bid to improve their FIFA rankings.

“We have to go to these games and collect wins. We want to increase our points in the rankings.

“I also hope to guide the youngsters in the team with my experience.”
