PETALING JAYA: Sabah winger S. Kumaahran (pic) didn’t get regular first XI appearances last season due to the club’s preference for the other flankers like Saddil Ramdani and Jailton Paraiba.
But this season the 27-year-old has been used on a rotational basis, getting five starts in 14 Super League games and he’s proving to be a lively presence in the Rhinos’ attack.
The former Penang and Melaka player said that his confidence grew after he got to play in Sabah’s 4-2 win over Perak in the Super League last month.
Sabah coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee has, since then, always relied on Kumaahran for his direct runs, dribbling and crosses.
“Before the Perak game, I wasn’t getting many minutes but when the coach told me I would start against Perak, I grabbed the opportunity,” he said.
“I was nervous but after a few touches and assists, I managed to givemy best. After that game, the coach saw my commitment and said I was giving my 100 percent. After that, I started in all the games.
“I scored against Kedah and was had some good combination plays with the other attackers. My confidence grew and I never looked back.”
In the five starts, Kumaahran scored only once but his overall contribution in attack has been telling thanks to his good combination with the other attackers.
He is now using the international break to continue working on his game to ensure he gets more regular appearances with Sabah.
“After the game against Kelantan on Nov 3, we were given a one day break and after that, it was all training.
“My motto is simple, do the hard work in training and the rewards will come. Now I just hope to get more goals and assists.”
