Panthers appoint ex-international Wan Rohaimi as new coach

PETALING JAYA: Penang have announced the appointment of Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail as the new head coach for their Super League team.

Wan Rohaimi, 48, will replace Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli, who was replaced due to the team’s poor performances in the Super League.

“Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail has now been appointed as the new head coach of Penang’s Super League team.

“He brings extensive experience in the Malaysian football arena, both as a player and a coach.

“Having played as a professional player for over 15 years, Wan Rohaimi has also represented the country in major tournaments such as the SEA Games and World Cup Qualifiers, with over 40 national appearances.

“In 2003, he also won the Charity Shield title with the Penang team,” the statement said.

Wan Rohaimi, a former Kelantan and Terengganu player, started his coaching career in 2012 when he led WR Soccer Kids, before moving to the National Football Development Programme (NFDP) in 2014.

In 2019, he coached the Perlis Piala Belia team before going to Penang in 2020 to coach the President Cup team.

His first professional break came in 2021 when he was hired to coach Police before moving to Kuala Lumpur II last year.

Penang, who have played 13 matches so far with only two wins, five draws and seven losses, are in 11th position in the standings with just 11 points.
