PETALING JAYA: It was not an easy decision for Nafuzi Zain (pic), but it was one he had to make.
The 46-year-old resigned as Kedah’s head coach, with sources speculating that he may soon be appointed as Malaysia’s Under-23 coach next month.
Nafuzi’s departure from the Canaries does not come as a surprise, given the financial struggles that have plagued the team. Players and staff, including Nafuzi himself, have reportedly gone months without pay and some for even eight months.
Despite these challenges, Nafuzi stayed on to guide the team this season, earning praise for his dedication.
He had to deal with issues like points deductions due to salary arrears and players refusing to participate in some matches because of financial concerns.
Even after Kedah’s 3-2 victory against Kuala Lumpur in the first leg of the Malaysia Cup round of 16 in Alor Setar last Friday, Nafuzi gave no indication he was planning to leave.
However, the club confirmed his resignation on Sunday.
“It was a heavy decision to make, but I decided to resign from my position. The game against Kuala Lumpur was my last as coach,” said Nafuzi.
“For sure, the decision will have an impact but I believe there is a rainbow after the rain, and the team will achieve success in the future.
“All the joys and sorrows we faced together were in pursuit of success for the green and yellow supporters. The memories I’ve made are truly unforgettable. This club are extraordinary.”
Nafuzi expressed his gratitude to the club’s management, players, coaches and fans for making his time in Alor Setar memorable.
“I would like to thank the owner Tan Sri Dr Mohd Daud Bakar, for giving me the opportunity to lead this club. To the players, I’m proud of your commitment in training and in matches.
“The teamwork displayed in every game was remarkable. They never gave up until the final whistle. Keep fighting with passion in the upcoming matches.
“I also want to thank all the staff who have consistently shown tremendous dedication to the team, whether behind the scenes or on the training field. I consider you all like my family.
“To the supporters who have stood by Kedah through thick and thin, words cannot express my gratitude for your wavering spirit. Finally, I hope Kedah will one day achieve great successes. Kedah will always remain in my heart.”
Under Nafuzi’s leadership, the Canaries finished fourth in the Super League and reached the FA Cup semi-finals last season.
Kedah are currently 10th in the Super League with 13 points.
