PETALING JAYA: A total of 28 of the 30 young referees currently participating in the Professional Referee Academy of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have been selected to attend the second batch Video Assistant Referee (VAR) training to enable them to obtain a VAR Licence.
FAM deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundaram, chairman of the FAM Referees Committee, said the development is something positive in FAM’s efforts to increase the number of referees who have VAR Licences.
“This Professional Referee Academy is a FAM project that aims to produce more referees to work in the country’s highest league, the Malaysian Super League. A total of 28 referees in this academy have already been selected to follow the VAR Referee training for the second batch where their average age is around 28 years old.
“The selection of these young and potential referees is based on their performance during matches and while attending the Professional Referee Academy course,” said Sivasundaram when officiating the Sixth Module of the FAM Professional Referee Academy 2023-2025, which ends in Petaling Jaya today.
He added the referees have been reminded that FAM will not tolerate matters related to their performances.
“At the same time, FAM will also take care of their welfare so that they can give full commitment and focus on their duties.”
