Winger Reichelt savours last flight with Philippines as he prepares for fatherhood

PETALING JAYA: The Philippines are in the semi-finals of the AFF Cup but they will not have their talisman winger Patrick Reichelt for the knockout stages.

The veteran player, who plays for Kuala Lumpur in the Super League, has called time on his international career and has confirmed that the last Group B game against Indonesia was his last in national colours.

He helped them to a 1-0 win over the Southeast Asian giants, and his teammates lifted him in a big celebration after the final whistle as they all knew it was his last game for the country.

The 36-year-old Reichelt said he had already made it known to the coaching and management staff that he would just play in the group stage of the AFF Cup, after which he would retire as he and his wife are expecting their first child soon.

“We’re expecting our first child in just a few days, and it was time for me to fly home and give my undivided attention to a family life. As this beautiful new chapter begins, another comes to an end,” he said.

“Yes, it is definitely a little disappointing not to be able to finish the tournament, especially since we are in the semis.

“But I’ve discussed it with the management and coaching staff, and they fully support my decision. I’ve zero regrets, especially after the win over Indonesia.

“I have confidence in this new generation. There is something special about this group of youngsters we have and it could be seen during the group stages.

“I believe they will give Thailand a good fight in the two-legged semi-finals.”

Reichelt has played for the Philippines in the last 13 years, amassing 93 caps, and scoring 16 goals.

“For nearly 13 years, this team have been my family. I owe so much of my life to this experience.

“We’ve shared Christmases, birthdays and even quarantines. I’ve grown up with this national team, and they’ve been a huge part in shaping me into the man I am today.

“Representing the Philippines has been the greatest honour of my professional career.”

Reichelt said that he would continue playing club football and will return to Kuala Lumpur as they prepare to take on Singaporean club Lions City Sailors in the AFF Club Championships on Jan 9.

But first things first. He wants to celebrate Christmas with his wife, as the baby is due to be born next month.
