PETALING JAYA: Selangor lifted the Challenge Cup for the first time after thrashing Police 4-0 in the second leg of the final at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Saturday (Feb 22) for a 7-0 win on aggregate.
The Red Giants won the first leg 3-2 but the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) disciplinary committee penalised Police for fielding an ineligible player and awarded a 3-0 win for Selangor. Police were also fined RM3,000.
In the second leg, Selangor drew first blood after just four minutes when Cape Verdean international Alvin Fortes sped past two defenders before beating Police goalkeeper Bryan See with a cool finish.
Five minutes later, they went two up with a headed goal by Venezuelan playmaker Yohandry Orozco off a cross by Chilean striker Ronnie Fernandez.
Fernandez then turned destroyer when he finished off a cross from wingback Quentin Cheng in the 30th minute to give Selangor a 3-0 lead.
In the second-half, Selangor continued their dominance with Jordanian striker Ali Olwan getting the fourth goal in the 81st minute after a pass from substitute Faisal Halim.
With this success, Selangor have ended their 10-year wait for a trophy. Their last silverware came in 2015 when they lifted the Malaysia Cup by beating Kedah 2-0.
