WHILE slices and hooks are caused by attacking the ball from a swing path that is narrow and steep or wide and shallow, shots that go straight right and left are all about clubface angle.
If you hit it left, work on keeping your elbows tight to your body and synchronised with your hips to ensure your hands lead the club into impact for descending, crisp and consistent strikes.
If you hit it right, focus on keeping your left arm straight at impact, as a bent elbow will result in an open face.
Elbow check If you focus on keeping your elbows tight to your body and in sync with your hips, your hands will lead the club into impact – and that equals consistency.
Ideal impact Your wrists should be square to your target when the club meets the ball.
You will notice your left forearm naturally rotates to do this.
1. Stay connected
Placing a cane or club under your arms (and ideally one through your belt loops) will help keep your arms tight to your body and your hips and elbows in sync throughout your swing.
2. Neutral angle
Sticking four pencils into the ground (you can use balls on a range mat) and passing the clubhead through the box will make you attack the ball from a neutral angle and help keep the face squarer for longer through impact.
