PETALING JAYA: Kelly Tan earned big cheers for Malaysian golf when she finished runner-up with best friend Matilda Castren of Finland in the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational in Michigan.

Kelly and Castren shot a seven-under 63 to finish the LPGA's only team tournament with a four-day total of 22-under 257 at Midland Country Club on Saturday.

However, they lost out by just a single stroke after Americans Cheyenne Knight and Elizabeth Szokol closed with a five-under 65 in the better-ball play format, waiting out a delay of almost two hours because of lightning while they were on the 13th hole.

Knight-Szokol managed to edge Kelly-Castren with their total of 23-under 257.

Kelly thus equalled her best career finish in the LPGA Tour as she was also runner-up with Castren in the tournament last year.

Kelly-Castren held the first round with a six-under 64 but slipped to second despite a stunning second round of seven-under 63.

Kelly-Castren remained on the hunt going into the final round with a two-under 68 as Knight-Szokol moved to the top after an impressive eight-under 62.
