PETALING JAYA: Captain Faris Harizan’s double strike was in vain as Malaysia began their campaign in the Sultan of Johor Cup hockey event with a 2-3 defeat to New Zealand in Johor Baru on Friday (Oct 27).
Luke Aldred gave New Zealand the lead through a sixth-minute penalty corner (PC) but Faris equalised for the Young Tigers by converting a penalty stroke a minute later.
The Kiwis were ahead again as Scott Cosslett scored through a PC in the 15th minute but Faris came to Malaysia’s rescue as he converted a PC in the 24th minute to draw level at 2-2.
James Hickson gave New Zealand the edge with a field goal in the 33rd minute for a 3-2 lead which they held on stoutly to secure three points.
Malaysian coach Amin Rahim said his charges had failed to capitalise on their chances and need to rectify their errors before meeting India on Saturday (Oct 28).
"We missed the opportunity to at least take a point from this match but there were some positives that we can take from this match," said Amin.
"We gave away too many penalty corners and although we only allowed two goals through PCs, we must stop giving so many scoring chances to the opposition."
Amin also said Malaysia must avoid playing catch-up against India and be more positive in going for a result on Saturday.
