PHNOM PENH: Malaysian paddlers missed the chance to make history in the SEA Games after losing in the final to defending champions Thailand 0-3 at the Morodok Table Tennis Hall on Thursday (May 11).

Karen Lyne went down 5-11, 9-11, 9-11 to Suthasini Sawettabut while Alice Chang lost to Orawan Paranang 11-5, 6-11, 6-11, 11-8, 9- 11.

Hope was on Tee Ai Xin to revive Malaysia's chances but she was beaten 2-11, 8-11, 7-11 to Jinnipa Sawattabut.

The silver is better than their bronze-medal finish at the last Games in Hanoi.

On Wednesday, Karen, Alice, Ai Xin, Ho Ying and Im Li Ying pulled off a surprise when they reached the final after 30 years in the event at this Games.

The last time the Malaysian women's team managed to qualify for the final was in the 1993 edition in Singapore but lost to Indonesia.

Malaysia have never won gold in the event in the history of the SEA Games.

Meanwhile, the men's team also fell in the final after losing 0-3 to Singapore.

Leong Chee Fong lost 11-8, 4-11, 9-11, 6-11 to Chew Zhe Yu while WongQi Shen also went down 4-11, 11-9, 5-11, 8-11 to Koen Pang Yew En.

Hope was on Choong Javen to spark a comeback but he lost 9-11, 14-12, 13-11, 9-11, 7-11 to Quek Yong Izaac.
