Wong wins Malaysia’s first gold at World Wushu Championships

PETALING JAYA: Wong Weng Son rose to the occasion in the year's final tournament, delivering the first gold for Malaysia at the World Wushu Championships in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday (Nov 19).

After enduring disappointments in the Cambodia SEA Games (May), Hangzhou Asian Games (Sept) and World Combat Games in Saudi Arabia (Oct), the Seremban-born exponent struck gold in the men's changquan event.

He scored a stunning 9.826 points to top the field of 78 competitors. This is his second career gold medal at the world meet, having also won the men's jianshu (sword) event in Kazan in 2017.

Indonesia's Seraf Naro Siregar claimed silver with 9.803 points.

Malaysia also got the bronze medal for men's changquan, with Clement Ting scoring 9.800 points.

It was the second medal at the ongoing world meet as the Sarawakian took silver in the men's daoshu on Friday (Nov 17).

Malaysia also got one silver from Loh Ying Ting (women's changquan) and one bronze from Tan Cheong Min (women's nangun) on the second day of the competition.

Malaysia is currently third in the medal standings with 1-3-2 with two days of competition remaining.
