Selangor silence the noisy futsal crowd

THE local fans screamed for Sarawak, drowning out the Selangor supporters. But on the futsal court, Selangor were unfazed as they silenced the home side 2-0 at the Kota Samarahan Indoor Stadium.

Midfielder Danish Faiz Hashim fired home right from the kick-off, scoring Selangor’s first goal in the opening minute in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) final match.

Defender Ahmed Haziq Haikal added a second goal in the 36th minute.

Selangor’s youngest player, Mohd Denniel Haikal Jeffry, 17, said the partisan crowd did not bother them.

“Playing in an arena full of fans did not affect me. Instead, I took it as an opportunity to prove myself to the crowd.”

“I also played in the Asean University Games last month, and I know what a crowd is like,” said Haziq.

The win was also a historic one for Selangor as this is the first time they have won the gold medal in futsal since the event was introduced at Sukma 2014.

Haziq added on: “I’m extremely happy because we were determined to break the long drought without a gold medal.”

Faiz echoed the sentiment, noting that Sarawak was the toughest team they had faced.

“I think that of all the teams, Sarawak were the hardest to play against,” he said. “Despite that, I’m happy we were able to put on our best performance and beat them.”

Sarawak had their opportunities in the match but just could not put away the ball.

Additionally, the team also lost two players to injuries. Awang Irfan Syahreeza Awang Ahmad had to be stretchered off, followed by Mohd Syukimi Farizan, who had already been dealing with an injury before the game.
