FORMER Olympian fencer Yu Peng Kean was a pleased man at the end of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) fencing competition.

Peng Kean, together with former national teammates Husnul Ariq and Ahmad Syukran from Valor Fencing Club enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing their charges stand tall on the podium in Kuching.

Their fencers fought their way to a total of four gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

Peng Kean was especially proud to see his students pull off an impressive clean sweep of the gold, silver and bronze in the boy's and girls' sabre categories for individual and team events.

"Our fencers represented six different states, namely FT, Johor, Penang, Melaka, Perak and Selangor," said Peng Kean, whose forte is in sabre.

"For foil category, our fencers also won two bronze medals - boy's individual and team.

"As former national fencers, we are happy to contribute to help develop the sport.

"We are pleased to see our fencers making it on the Sukma stage. It's been a long time since fencing is included in Sukma and everybody were looking forward to it," said Peng Kean, who represented Malaysia at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Teh Zi Hao, representing Johor, bagged gold in the boy's sabre individual and silver in the team.

His charges Aidan Lee Jared Marcus, Wlliam Lee, Dylan Lee and Sebastian Lim also featured for Perak in the victorious boy's sabre team.

Zi Hao, Aidan and Dylan bagged gold in the cadet category in the Commonwealth Youth Fencing Championships in Auckland, New Zealand recently.

Peng Kean also guided the Federal Territories girls' sabre team comprising Resha Shaveena, Nur Irdina Amani and Isabel Chan to victory.
