PETALING JAYA: There’s no stopping Mandy Cebelle Chen as she continues to kick up a storm for Malaysia in wushu.
Barely two weeks ago after signing off from her final Malaysia Games (Sukma) campaign in Sarawak with two gold medals, the Selangor-born Mandy was one of the three exponents who delivered a timely Merdeka Day cheers at the just concluded 4th World Taijiquan Championships in Singapore.
Mandy bagged two silvers in the women’s taijiquan (sun style) and women’s taijiquan (yang style) routines.
Mandy is not done yet as she wants to add on to her collection when she takes part in the Asian Championships in Macau from Sept 9-16.
In Sukma, she grabbed two gold medals although she had aggravated her right ankle injury three weeks before the Games.
“It has really been an emotional journey for me this year. I’ve been working hard since the start of the year and what I’ve managed had definitely boosted my confidence,” said Mandy.
“I’m hoping for my right ankle to hold up well as I still have the Asian championships up next,” she said.
“I’ll be working on strengthening my ankle and hopefully can recover.
“I was holding back during my routine in the world meet but I’m thankful I managed to perform well enough,” said the 21-year-old, who returned home with the wushu team from Singapore yesterday.
Malaysia finished sixth overall in the world meet with two golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.
2022 Vietnam SEA Games gold medallist Tan Zhi Yan and Kwang Yong Xin claimed gold in men’s taijiquan (sun style) and women’s taijijian (third set) respectively.
Yong Xin also took silver in the women’s taijiquan (third set) while the bronze medals were contributed by Zhi Yan in the men’s taijijian (optional) and taijiquan (third set).
