KUALA LUMPUR: Wong Weng Son maintained his outstanding record in the Taolu World Cup by delivering Malaysia's second gold in the 3rd Taolu World Cup in Yokahama, Japan on Sunday.

The 32-year-old etched his name in the record books after scoring 9.773 points to top the jianshu (sword) event on the final day of the wushu competition.

Japan's Motoyoshi Araki got the silver with 9.766 points.

Weng Son thus became the first exponent to win the jianshu event in all three editions of the World Cup meet.

Participation in the prestigious World Cup meet is only limited to the top eight finishers in each discipline at the last world championships in Texas, United States last year.

Weng Son is also the most successful Malaysian exponent in World Cup participation as this is his fourth gold medal.

The Seremban-born exponent won the jianshu gold in his World Cup debut in Fujian, China in 2016.

He went on to claim a double in the jianshu and qiangshu (spear) event in Yangon, Myanmar in 2018.

This is the second World Cup medal in Yokohama for Weng Son having taken bronze in the changquan event on Saturday.

There was also extra cheers for Malaysia as Tan Cheong Min secured silver in the women's nanquan.

Cheong Min just missed out on the gold after scoring 9.770 points.

Indonesia's Tasya Ayu Puspa Dewi got the gold with 9.773 points.

Cheong Min had won the first gold for Malaysia in women's nangun on Saturday.

Pang Pui Yee also took silver in the women's qiangshu to help Malaysia to finish with a total overall of 2-3-2.
