Khairulnizam sails to Asian title in China

PETALING JAYA: It was double joy for Malaysian sailor Khairulnizam Afendy who came out triumphant at the ICLA Asian Open Championship in Haikou, China today (Dec 20).

The 31-year-old sailor clinched the overall and Master titles (above 30-year-old) at the end of five days of racing yesterday.

It was also sweet redemption for the Langkawi-born sailor who missed out on his goal to finish in the top 20 at the Paris Olympics in August. Khairulnizam was placed 32nd overall in his third Olympic sailing competition.

Khairulnizam came in first in three of the last four races to clinch the Asian title.

The worst result is struck out from the tally and Khairulnizam collected 28 points from nine races to upstage Hong Kong's early leader Nicholas Halliday (30 points) and 2023 Hangzhou Asiad bronze medallist Vishnu Saravanan of India (36 points).
