MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Highlights of the second day of the Australian Open on Monday (all times GMT):

1322 OSAKA OUTLASTS GARCIA IN THREE SETS

Four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka defeated Caroline Garcia 6-3 3-6 6-3, avenging her defeat by the Frenchwoman in last year's first round.

It was Osaka's first Australian Open win since 2022, and she will next face Karolina Muchova.

1323 PAUL SURVIVES O'CONNELL IN FOUR-HOUR BATTLE

American Tommy Paul beat Christopher O'Connell in a five-set thriller 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-7 (5) 7-5 to reach the second round. The 12th seed will face Japan's Kei Nishikori in round two.

1210 COLLINS ADVANCES WITH STRAIGHT-SETS WIN OVER SNIGUR

American 10th seed Danielle Collins sealed her place in the second round with a 7-6 (4) 6-3 victory over qualifier Daria Snigur of Ukraine in about one and half hours. She will meet Australian Destanee Aiava next.

1118 DJOKOVIC OVERCOMES BASAVAREDDY IN FOUR-SET WIN

Novak Djokovic began his quest for a 25th Grand Slam title with a 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over 19-year-old American wild card Nishesh Basavareddy. The three hour match was a good test for the 10-times Australian Open Champion, the 37-year-old Serb will face Jaime Faria from Portugal in the second round.

1040 FEARNLEY STUNS KYRGIOS ON DEBUT

Briton Jacob Fearnley marked his tournament debut with an impressive 7-6(3) 6-3 7-6(2) victory over Australian Nick Kyrgios who was playing his first match at Melbourne Park in three years.

1008 ALCARAZ STARTS WITH DOMINANT WIN

Four-times Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz began his Australian Open campaign with a commanding 6-1 7-5 6-1 victory over Alexander Shevchenko to advance to the second round, where he will take on Yoshihito Nishioka.

Alcaraz, 21, is bidding to become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam at the Australian Open, having won the French Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon.

1008 DIMITROV RETIRES, PASSARO ADVANCES

Bulgarian 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov retired hurt while trailing 5-7 1-2 to Italian lucky loser Francesco Passaro in the Australian Open first round. Dimitrov is the first top-10 player to exit the tournament.

0906 KOKKINAKIS ADVANCES AFTER FOUR-HOUR EPIC

Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis fought back from a set down and took painkillers during a medical timeout to beat Roman Safiullin 3-6 6-3 6-3 7-6(5) in a first-round match that lasted over four hours.

"I could barely sleep last night, a lot of anxiety... To play in front of you guys was incredible," he said, pointing to the home fans.

He will next face 15th seed Jack Draper who beat Mariano Navone 4-6 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2.

0713 PEGULA BREEZES PAST JOINT

American seventh seed Jessica Pegula, seeking an elusive Grand Slam title, wasted little time in beating Australian Maya Joint, moving on with a 6-3 6-0 victory.

Lucky Loser Harriet Dart also advanced to the second round after beating Croatian Jana Fett 7-5 2-6 7-6(7). The British player will next face Croatian 18th seed Donna Vekic.

0648 THOMPSON BEATS KOEPFER

Australian 27th seed Jordan Thompson beat German qualifier Dominik Koepfer 7-6(3) 6-4 4-6 6-3 to move into the second round for the fourth time in his career.

0640 BENCIC DUMPS OUT OSTAPENKO

Swiss former world number four Belinda Bencic advanced to the second round after the Tokyo Olympics champion beat Latvian 16th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 7-6(6).

0553 SINNER THROUGH IN STRAIGHT SETS

Defending champion and top seed Jannik Sinner got his 2025 campaign off to a winning start by beating Chilean Nicolas Jarry 7-6(2) 7-6(5) 6-1 on Rod Laver Arena.

0441 SWIATEK STORMS PAST SINIAKOVA

Polish world number two Iga Swiatek, chasing a sixth Grand Slam crown and a first at Melbourne Park, eliminated Katerina Siniakova 6-3 6-4.

0437 BRONZETTI SHOCKS AZARENKA

Twice champion Victoria Azarenka was sent packing by unseeded Italian Lucia Bronzetti, who beat the Belarusian 21st seed 6-2 7-6(2).

0423 TIAFOE OVERCOMES RINDERKNECH

American 17th seed Frances Tiafoe held off Arthur Rinderknech in a thrilling five-setter, edging the Frenchman 7-6(2) 6-3 4-6 6-7(4) 6-3.

Tiafoe, a former quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park, vomited at the end of fourth set before wrapping up the victory in four hours and eight minutes.

0322 SVITOLINA MARCHES ON

Ukrainian 28th seed Elina Svitolina, a twice quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park, progressed after a 6-4 6-4 victory over Romanian Sorana Cirstea.

0304 LOCAL HOPE TOMLJANOVIC ADVANCES

Australian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 6-4 4-6 6-4 on Margaret Court Arena to reach the second round.

0257 MICHELSEN UPSETS TSITSIPAS

Unseeded American Alex Michelsen stunned Greek 11th seed and 2023 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5 6-3 2-6 6-4.

0205 GAUFF PASSES KENIN TEST

American third seed Coco Gauff, the 2023 U.S. Open winner, knocked out compatriot and former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin with a 6-3 6-3 win.

0159 SHNAIDER THROUGH AFTER STRAIGHT SETS WIN

Russian 12th seed Diana Shnaider, 20, advanced after beating Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-6(4) 6-4.

0125 BRITON BURRAGE FIRST WINNER ON DAY TWO

Britain's Jodie Burrage was the first winner on day two when she romped into the second round with a 6-2 6-4 victory over French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean on court 13.

The world number 173 will next face either third seed Coco Gauff or former champion Sofia Kenin, who were playing their first-round match on Rod Laver Arena.

0005 PLAY GETS UNDERWAY AS SCHEDULED ON DAY TWO

Play got underway as scheduled on day two of the championships with no sign of the wet weather that washed out a good chunk of play on day one.

The temperature was hovering around the 24 degrees Celsius (75F) mark with blue skies and bright sunshine at the Melbourne Park precinct.
