Sunway College A-Level ticket to Oxbridge

Sunway College Cambridge GCE A-Level programme is considered the benchmark in British educational excellence and a widely recognised pre-university qualification globally.

Considered the benchmark in British educational excellence and a widely recognised pre-university qualification globally, the Sunway College A-Level programme is a golden ticket to top UK universities – such as University of Cambridge and University of Oxford or Oxbridge for short – and other international world-leading institutions.

Following the footsteps of his siblings, Vanness Lai Wye Junn enrolled in Sunway College which he said is the go-to higher learning institution among people in his hometown in Taiping, Perak.

The 19-year-old decided to take on its Cambridge GCE A-Level programme after discovering his passion for physics in upper secondary school.

He was however unsure of his journey in the beginning.

“When I started my A-Level, the environment was different (from what I was used to), the people here are more certain about their future and the lecturers have deep understanding in their field – and (you) can tell that they love their work.”

“I spoke to my lecturers and decided to broaden my scope to pursue Natural Science and might work my way to do a PhD, ” he said, adding that he found the A-Level programme to be well-structured.

Lai said his mentor and physics lecturer, Ng Chee Beng, shared invaluable knowledge on future career prospects, the best universities to apply for, and helped perfect his personal statement that led him to secure a conditional offer to University of Cambridge to study Natural Science majoring in Physics.

For Eng Yi Jun, 19, sitting for his A-Level was a natural step after completing IGCSE in secondary school, especially since he had every intention to further his education in the UK.

The budding doctor is still in disbelief over receiving a conditional offer to read Medicine at University of Oxford.

“Having the opportunity to study at University of Oxford really is a rare privilege. In fact, my hands shook more after getting the decision, ” he said.

The KL-born said while A-Level is no easy task, “Sunway College has all the right elements required for students to excel.

“I am thankful for the help of my mentor and biology lecturer Dr Khor Shy Cian. I still remember her taking time to chat and reassure me that I was well within my grasp, when I was rather worried about my upcoming University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT).”

He also expressed gratitude towards the International Office University Placement (IOUP) at Sunway for its support and advice throughout his application.

With a knack for preparing students with their university applications, Sunway College also provides additional guidance and support through outreach programmes conducted in collaboration with Cambridge University Malaysia Society (CUMaS) and Oxford University Malaysia Club (OUMC).

The programme has also aided students in developing soft skills like leadership qualities through participation in the Sunway College A-Level Student Council.

Before Covid-19 hit, Hor Ye Heng, 20, participated in a few extracurricular activities and grew as a person with “the opportunities provided by the entire programme.”

He said that he joined Sunway’s A-Level programme as it had a good reputation in his hometown in Alor Setar, and found it to have a “motivating environment to work hard.”

Having a burning passion to be an electrical engineer since he was seven, Hor has secured a conditional offer to pursue his interest in studying Electrical Engineering at Cambridge and found invaluable advice received from his mentor and chemistry lecturer Chan Hui Ting and physics lecturer Chan Wai Tuck.

Despite the global pandemic, Sunway A-Level students have once again achieved a 100% passing rate in their examinations last November.
