Studies show beta-glucan can alleviate Type 2 diabetes mellitus conditions
HOUSEHOLD names Oat King and Oat King Sport have proven to be breakthrough complementary supplements against Type 2 diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Clinical trials have shown the high beta-glucan Oat King to be effective in improving glycated haemoglobin levels in diabetics and the high fibre content of Oat King Sport in alleviating symptoms experienced by rheumatoid arthritis patients.
According to the clinical trial, high beta-glucan may help to reduce cardiovascular disease risk.
Oat King and Oat King Sport, manufactured by Penang-based TG Ocean Health Food Industries Sdn Bhd, are halal-certified multigrain products made from 24 types of whole grains and beans with health-enhancing benefits.
The ingredients used include oat, barley, wheat, red kidney bean, green kernel black bean, soy bean, millet and brown rice imported from Europe, Australia and China.
Sugar-free with no preservatives, artificial colouring and flavours, the products have received MeSTI and Healthier Choice Food certifications by the Ministry of Health.
A recent test by UNIPEQ Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia showed that Oat King has a moderate glycemic index value of 56.
Both equally nutritious and delicious, the main difference between Oat King and Oat King Sport is that the former is in fine powder form while one can savour the grainy texture in the latter.
Oat King
Oat King contains both soluble and insoluble fibres, whereby the beta-glucan works effectively to lower total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) without any effect on HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol).
Universiti Sains Malaysia conducted a clinical trial in collaboration with TG Ocean on the efficacy of multigrain supplementation in Type 2 diabetes mellitus via consumption of Oat King with positive results.
The 18-month study which started in January 2020 recorded that the high beta-glucan multigrain supplement had improved the glycated haemoglobin levels in Type 2 diabetics.
Principal investigator and good clinical practice-certified nutritionist Dr Lee Lai Kuan said the clinical trial was held at USM’s Advanced Medical and Dental Institute in Kepala Batas, Penang, and funded by TG Ocean. It has been registered with the US National Library of Medicine under the NCT identifier NCT04597229.
The trial involved 50 test subjects split into a study group of 25 people who were prescribed two sachets or 60g of Oat King alongside standard medication daily, and a control group of 25 who took only standard medication.
Dr Lee said patients who were prescribed Oat King as a complementary supplement over a 12-week period showed improved glycated haemoglobin levels.
There was also reduction in patients’ total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total body fat and visceral fat. The supplement group showed minimal gastrointestinal side effect and the supplement was well-tolerated following prolonged consumption.
The research team – which included family medicine specialist Dr Mastura Mohd Sopian, associate professor Dr Foo Keng Yuen, biomedical scientist Dr Mohamad Hafizi Abu Bakar and postgraduate candidate Nur Anis Mohd Ariffin – noted enhanced superoxide dismutase levels while concentrations of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl were reduced significantly.
Oat King Sport
An Oat King Sport human clinical trial showed that the high total fibre and antioxidant multigrain supplementation has a role in alleviating symptoms experienced by patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Funded by TG Ocean, the research headed by Dr Lee which involved associate professor Dr Wan Syamimee Wan Ghazali, an internal medicine specialist in rheumatology, found that 25 patients who took the beverage twice a day recorded a significant reduction in the disease activity score, reduced pain severity as well as a decline in the morning stiffness index.
Dr Lee said the clinical trial consisted of two groups – 25 participants who consumed Oat King Sport twice a day plus rheumatoid arthritis medication, and another 26 participants who only consumed rheumatoid arthritis medication.
“Twelve weeks’ consumption of Oat King Sport by the 25 participants showed drastically improved serum concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers,” she said, adding that the trial was conducted on people aged between 21 and 74 years.
The research showed that the general blood profile remains unchanged and there is no significant gastrointestinal-related side effects.
The human clinical trial, conducted at the clinical trial ward of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, over 18 months from July 2018, have been registered with the US National Library of Medicine under the NCT identifier NCT04033809.
