A UNIVERSITY of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) graduate has the edge of working globally with leading companies including Fortune 500 firms.
Employer testimonials reveal that UNM graduates possess key attributes, abilities, soft skills, hard skills and competencies that employers look for in candidates. This gives them a headstart at building a successful career.
According to UNM Careers Advisory Service (CAS) head Alicia Ch’ng, UNM graduates are hired via careers fairs, recruitment talks, on-campus interviews, sector-focused careers events, and resume collection for employers.
“For on-campus interviews, employers conduct face-to-face interviews on campus and in some instances, our students have been offered the job on the same day. Examples of companies that participated in on-campus interviews are Dell, Intel and Crystal International Group,” Ch’ng said.
The CAS team works actively with other leading companies for internship placements for students. UNM students have done internships with ExxonMobil, KPMG, Intel, IBM, Citi, P&G, Dyson, GSK, Huawei, Maybank, Mondelez, Nestle and Standard Chartered.
CAS Award
They CAS team also received the GradMalaysia Malaysia’s 100 Leading Graduate Employer Awards: Best Career Centre of the Year.
According to the judges, the win was attributed to CAS’ ability to organise powerful programmes with employers, which had high participation from the students, having a well-equipped team and their impeccable presentation.
The judges were impressed with the centre’s excellent work on the series of Careers Quick Tips and its usefulness for students.
UNM’s bi-annual Graduate Destination Survey report
The UNM’s bi-annual Graduate Destination Survey report is carried out six months after each graduation ceremony. It details the employability rate of UNM graduates. Since 2018, UNM graduates had an employability rate close to 90%.
Dedicated programmes in helping students gain employment
“Given the changing career needs of our students and opportunities in emerging fields, we have regular meetings with employers and ongoing collaboration,” Ch’ng explained.
One example is the Get Ready Get Hired Certificate Programme. This structured programme aims to increase students’ self-awareness, train their job-hunting skills and enhance their employability from their involvement in these activities.
The Career Mentoring programme meanwhile, allows students to work directly with experienced employers and alumni. Upon completion of this programme, they will be awarded a certificate of participation.
“Finally for the Forage Virtual Work Experience Programmes, we partnered with Forage – an online resource offering virtual experience programmes designed by leading companies, to offer all UNM students practical work experience through Virtual Work Experience Programmes,” she said.
The modules offered are free and created by JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Accenture, BCG, Deloitte and General Electric, and students will receive a personalised certificate of completion.
