ADVANCEMENTS in technology today have enabled the wellness industry to continuously innovate products and services towards improving health and well-being.
This is a boon, especially in such times when the recent pandemic has highlighted the importance of health and overall wellness for quality of life.
Having made a name as a wellness company that fuses technology and innovation into all aspects of its operation, Wellous is no stranger to harnessing the benefits of the latest technology in continuously innovating its products.
“Industry 4.0 significantly improves nutraceutical manufacturers’ ability to constantly verify their processes, boost productivity and reduce errors,” says Wellous product development specialist Dr Sandy Ong.
“By utilising smart sensors and advanced data analysis techniques such as machine learning, information transparency is achieved – improving the accuracy of process records and supporting informed decision-making process.
“To embark on this journey, we have participated in a readiness assessment conducted by SIRIM to identify the areas of improvement according to three shift factors – the people, process and technology.
“Also, we have engaged professional vendors to advise on the shop floor layout and equipment required.”
To offer consumers top quality products made from the best that nature has to offer, Wellous adopts a green technology principle whereby the company ensures all raw materials are sourced from reputable suppliers who utilise modern technologies that are environmentally friendly, safe from any health hazard and at the same time, ensures active compounds are of the highest concentration, bioavailability and bioactivity in the human body.
Ong cites some examples of how the company uses technology to enhance its products: “Technology enables us to mask the unpleasant taste and smell of ingredients so that they are acceptable for consumption.
“More importantly, it also prevents changes to the active molecular structures. This maintains their therapeutic properties and efficacy.
“In addition, special attention is given to ensure each step of the manufacturing process follows the highest standard procedure to uphold formulation quality and stability.”
She said this has consequently enhanced consumer confidence and improved their compliance.
In a continuous effort towards innovation, Wellous is currently exploring green extraction – developing extraction methods using modern technology whereby less or no organic solvents are used to minimise environmental and health impacts, and maximise the yield of desired natural molecule/active by selective extraction.
The concept is based on designing extraction processes to reduce energy consumption, allow usage of alternative solvents and renewable natural products, and ensure a safe and high-quality extract/product.
“This goes hand in hand with our mission to produce premium products using quality ingredients which are clean, scientifically proven and promote sustainability,” says Ong.
To this end, new advances in technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnology have shown tremendous potential for sustainable development.
Though these technologies have already brought enormous benefits, it is apparent that the industry still lacks the workforce with the appropriate technical skills.
The need for skilled personnel that understand both the manufacturing processes and the supporting digital tools are critical and essential to guarantee successful execution.
Besides that, handling of data growth requires trained personnel to interpret and analyse the data to be used in the decision-making process.
Therefore, human resource development remains fundamental in creating a skilled workforce for strong, balanced and sustainable growth.
The interoperability of equipment also needs to be taken into consideration. To drive a functional system, equipment from different brands must be able to operate in conjunction with each other.
This means more collaborative works and initiatives between equipment producers are needed.
