Nexus International school learners win 140 university offers and USD1mil scholarships

THE International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) graduates from Nexus International School Malaysia have won over 140 university offers and received US$1mil (RM4.45mil) in scholarships from prestigious universities globally.

These institutions include Stanford University, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, University of Glasgow, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Hong Kong University among others.

Offering international education and boarding, Nexus has achieved an outstanding average score of 35 points in the examinations, above the 2021 worldwide average score, achieved by one of the more diverse IB graduating cohort with learners from 13 different nationalities offering a truly international experience for learners.

IBDP at Nexus

The IBDP is made up of six subject groups offering a wide range of subject choices for pre-university students, which includes the opportunity to take creative subjects as well as languages. The core subjects aim to broaden students’ education experiences and challenge their application of knowledge and skills including Theory of Knowledge (TOK, Community, Action, Service (CAS) and Extended Essay.

It also emphasises its career guidance and higher education counselling, whereby learners are provided with advice and guidance as early as 14 years old on their career aptitude, exposure to diverse higher education and career choices and one-to-one assistance on university application processes (including writing personal statements), scholarship sourcing and more.

A headstart to university life

Testimony to the IB approach and philosophy of producing life-long learners who are able to make a difference, Nexus graduates have a headstart to their future.

One such learner, Andrew Kuik, has won a scholarship to study Computer Science at Stanford University and has achieved 42 points in the IB exams.

“I chose to continue to study the IB Diploma because I felt it gave me the opportunity to take up a wider range of subjects, which helps open up more possibilities in career choices,” says Kuik, who has been with Nexus for six years of his secondary school life.

Meanwhile, the University of British Columbia, Canada, has recognised Nexus graduate Joseph Chung with the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow award, offering a full scholarship worth US$250,000 (RM1.1mil) to pursue a Bachelor of Science at the university.

While studying at Nexus, Chung established a research internship with The Genomics Research Center, Academia Sinica in Taiwan and was granted a patent for his invention of a “Safety Alert Method for Child Safety Seats”.

He attributes his success to the school’s philosophy of supporting every learner in their passion and to reach their potential. That said, Chung was always able to reach out to his Science teachers for clarifications on questions that were not in his textbook.

He has won other awards including the Best Biology Award and Top 15 Nationwide in the International Medical University (IMU) Science Discovery Challenge 2021 and was named two-time National Champion in the Sime Darby Young Innovators Challenge (SDYIC).
