Asia Metropolitan University paves the way for postgraduate learning

AMU formally recognises APEL entry – opening opportunities for individuals who have had substantial work experience but lack the formal academic qualifications to pursue higher education.

FOLLOWING the wise words of Winston S. Churchill – “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” – Asia Metropolitan University (AMU) developed its postgraduate programmes designed not only for the busy working adult but also for individuals who are motivated to improve and upgrade their skill set.

For instance, the University’s Master in Business Administration (online distance learning or ODL) programme is designed for one to learn at his own pace, with the learning schedule flexible.

“The subjects are prepared to match current business needs,” says MBA ODL student Qairul Muzammil Kamaruzaman who attests to how well the programme has been designed.

“Even though the programme is self-paced and is online, I still have my coursemates to study together with, and to complete our assignments,” he says, adding that the programme is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute of UK (CMI) which will give him two certifications upon the completion of his studies.

Fellow classmate Karen Shamala concurs: “One of the reasons why I like this programme is that it is only 12-months long and it is entirely online, which gives me a lot of flexibility.

“The lecturers are very helpful and willing to provide students additional time and materials so that they can catch up as quickly as possible in areas where they fall behind.”

Karen says that as a mother of two, and working full-time, enrolling at AMU has been one of the best decisions she has made.

Moreover, the university’s Centre for Postgraduate Programme also offers the Doctor of Philosophy in Management (PhD) programme aimed at advancing leadership with a focus on theories and methodologies related to research and practice in business management. The programme is structured as a three-year full-time programme or four years part-time.

Another popular postgraduate programme at the university is the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Methodology – designed to develop great teachers by enhancing their teaching effectiveness and provide insights into key educational issues.

Classified as a Level 7 programme by the Malaysian Qualification Framework, this programme’s competencies are equivalent to that of a Master level. Students may choose to complete it in as little as nine months as a full-time student, or one year as a part-time student.

Sashirekha Krishnasamy, 50, a student of this programme credits the lecturers and the university for making her fall in love with learning all over again.

“There were many events throughout the course that served as memorable moments. One that stands out and also made me realise my full potential in the teaching field is the opportunity I got when presenting mock macro teaching on Microsoft Word.”

New students are also able to withdraw from their EPF, with a tax exemption of up to RM7,000. Students are also eligible to apply for the AFFIN Education Financing-i (education loan) as additional financial support.
