CPA Australia’s CPA Program provides a deep understanding of the issues confronting businesses today and the hands-on tools for its members to succeed.

PwC Malaysia’s Risk Assurance Services associate, Constance Luk Wei-Qi CPA (Aust.), is not afraid of a challenge. As soon as she graduated from university, Luk undertook CPA Australia’s CPA Program.

“The easy-going, supportive staff, registration process, and opportunity to self-study throughout the program helped me to decide on CPA Australia,” she says.

An open door to networking

Completing the CPA Program has also helped with her career and life outside of work. For example, it enabled her to establish a new raft of connections.

“It’s been amazing to share knowledge with people with different areas of expertise, which may one day lead to possible collaborations. Through the programme, I’ve learned that everything is connected,” she says.

With networking high on her agenda, Luk has attended a couple of CPA Australia events, both pre- and post-Covid. Importantly, she believes employers put a high value on CPA Australia certification.

Flexibility for the future

Luk shares, “CPA Australia is widely recognised and opens the door to opportunities for members in many different countries. Being an accountant isn’t an easy path, as the world constantly changes, so does the financial side. As accountants, we need to learn how to quickly adapt to these changes.

“Also, the newsletters help us to keep track of current world issues and their implications which, I believe, is a real advantage of membership.”

Luk found the Contemporary Business Issues and Financial Risk Management subjects especially interesting and received her certification in January this year.

“I learned how data and tech and natural resources influence the future of business, as well as how a business needs to manage risks,” she explains.

Luk has no hesitation in recommending CPA Australia to other established and aspiring professionals, noting that the learning process doesn’t end after certification.

CPA Australia offers both full-time and self-paced online study with a range of guided learning tools; flexibility that is useful for participants who want to find the time to pursue their personal interests outside of work.

For example, Luk has an interest in mental issues that sometimes affect those in the wider community. She has established a connection with various international mental health programmes, with her overriding objective being to help young people in Malaysia realise their full potential.

She also represented Malaysia at the Youth Camp for ASEAN and Friends’ Engagement in South Korea.

Of course, juggling all this hasn’t been easy. “Time management is important, even though the CPA Program was self-paced,” she says.

CPA Australia's online education platform, My Online Learning, provided many benefits for Luk. “There were recorded lectures highlighting important points, mini quizzes on sub-units, mock exams, and downloadable study notes, all of which helped.”

So, what does Luk like most about being a member of CPA Australia? She summarises it in one word: “flexibility”.

“Regardless of what field we’re in, we all want flexibility in our jobs and lifestyle. It’s all about work-life balance, and in this regard, CPA Australia is a perfect fit for me. It allows me to have the flexibility to work at one of the Big Four, improve in areas that interest me like data analytics, and pursue my passion for mental health issues,” she says.
