IN conjunction with International Women’s Day, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) will be hosting a webinar on Lifting Women’s Voices: Embracing Gender Equity on March 18.

"The prime objective of this webinar is to understand the meaning of equity and equality and how they relate to embracing diversity and inclusion in our society," said NUMed chief operating officer and webinar organising chairperson Premila Nair.

The webinar which is part of the Forward NUMed series on women's empowerment is divided into two parts.

The first part will feature keynote speeches from successful figures in education, science and technology. They will discuss the meaning and importance of gender equity and how it can be advocated by every individual within their own sphere of influence.

The second part will be a panel discussion whereby renowned speakers in various fields will discuss the issue of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the workplace, the education sector and Malaysia as a whole.

In their keynote speeches, Microsoft Malaysia director of legal, corporate and government affairs Jasmine Begum, and EduCity Iskandar director of operations Prof Dr Sakina Sofia Baharom will present an overview of gender equity and equality in Malaysian society.

"We intend to feature renowned women in professional settings from various organisations in this webinar, allowing participants to garner the perspectives of corporate leaders, professionals and education specialists," said Premila.

The panel discussion will be on Driving Mindset Change for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and How to Embrace It. Panellists include Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia chief executive officer Mak Joon Nien; Malaysia Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) president and Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) advisor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Asma Ismail; the Centre of Applied Data Science (CADS) founder and chief executive officer Sharala Axryd; and American Council on Exercise (ACE) health coach Ruth Fernandez.

The session will be moderated by 2X Marketing marketing programme manager Marc Kevin Natusch.

"It is our fervent hope that this webinar, in line with the International Women's Day theme of #EmbraceEquity, will serve as an eye opener for many to be engaged, inspired and motivated to uphold women's empowerment.

“We also want to inform women about the ways to overcome societal pressures and challenges related to gender equity," said Premila.
