SENIOR living communities are now considered the new frontier of hospitality management; a suitable living environment is key to improving the overall quality of life of elderly people.
Understanding this, Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) is introducing its flagship senior living residence in Sunway City, Selangor, called Sunway Sanctuary.
“The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) observed that Malaysia’s ageing population is growing at a faster-than-expected rate whereby more than 15% of its population will be above the age of 65 by 2050. This qualifies Malaysia as an ageing nation,” says SHG president Datuk Lau Beng Long.
“A World Bank report in 2020, ‘A Silver Lining: Productive and Inclusive Aging for Malaysia’, stated that although there are challenges that come with an ageing society, aged care could become a new economic driver and this is termed the ‘silver economy’.
“As seen in high-income countries, older persons have the potential to be relatively well-off consumers. Hence, we are seeing demand for high quality, comfortable senior living residences,” he shares.
There are six key pillars that characterise Sunway Sanctuary. Apart from its convenient location and easy accessibility, Sunway Sanctuary was designed to encourage comfort and elegant living, alongside holistic wellness with a balanced focus on nurturing the mind, body and soul.
This is done through curated experiences like workshops, excursions and celebrations to keep the residents engaged while fostering new friendships with like-minded peers, thoughtful facilities dedicated to fitness, wellness and leisure, as well as quality healthcare services that are within reach.
Unlike other similar senior living projects, Lau explains that Sunway Sanctuary is the first and only residence to be annexed to a hospital – Sunway Medical Centre.
“Having nurses and medical professionals in such close proximity and checking on seniors regularly is a benefit to our residents,” he says, adding that this is on top of the doctor visits from the Sunway Home Healthcare team.
“Extending our reach into the senior living industry is not a big leap for Sunway Healthcare or Sunway Group, because we already have experience in healthcare, hospitality, leisure, retail, property and construction,” he points out.
The residents’ daily chores such as laundry and cleaning, and meals will be taken care of by their in-house hospitality and F&B teams.
Sunway Sanctuary features 100,000sqft of wellness and lifestyle facilities such as a cinema, heated salt water infinity pool, games room, fitness centre, karaoke lounges and event spaces.
“From cosy nooks and a library to our dining room with magnificent views of Sunway City, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
“The spaces are designed in such a manner that there is ample room for families to come and visit their elderly relatives, parents or grandparents in cheerful, airy and comfortable settings,” says Lau.
Sunway Senior Living general manager Leonard Theng shares that residents and their family members would have peace of mind knowing an organisation with 24 years of healthcare experience is the backbone of Sunway Sanctuary.
There are eight types of units available at Sunway Sanctuary, with studio, one- and two-bedroom categories ranging from 372sqft to 1,028sqft.
“Although Sunway Sanctuary is launched by Sunway Healthcare Group, this active retirement living residences operates under a hotel licence.
“There will be essential services such as concierge services, weekly housekeeping, laundry services, F&B offerings, activities and wellness programmes for residents.”
He also adds that Sunway Sanctuary is available for a “retirement staycation” to allow seniors to check out its suitability.
“Short-term stays would be focused on wellness elements with assisted and active living options that will cater to both locals as well as foreign short-term stay residents.
“With regards to long-term residences of six months or more, we provide a package which promotes active retirement living among seniors as well as an assisted living package for seniors requiring a little bit of help with their day-to-day activities.”
