Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia’s medical degree will give a new generation of doctors the edge they need.
WITH rapid developments emerging in the world of medicine and healthcare, medical students need to be ready and well-prepared to tackle a constantly evolving and diverse set of challenges.
Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) understands this need and aims to empower and equip the upcoming generation of medical professionals with world-class UK medical education.
NUMed, an international branch campus of Newcastle University, UK, is offering its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme which encompasses a five-year integrated undergraduate medical study.
This is identical to what is offered at the university’s medical school in the UK.
“The science of medicine is fascinating. As a doctor, I’m able to advocate evidence-based intervention and impact my patients positively, which really inspires me,” shares NUMed honorary professor of Medicine Dr Edmund LC Ong.
Dr Ong has vast experience in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine, a field in which he has garnered many years of practice in the UK.
He believes that successful medical students need to be able to assimilate, understand, and apply a wide knowledge-base within a clinical setting. “They should be compassionate, and have good communication and organisational skills as well,” he adds.
In its commitment to delivering high-quality medical education, NUMed is instrumental in shaping doctors of the future and preparing them for the world of medicine.
NUMed’s academics, says Dr Ong, consist of highly-skilled and trained lecturers of diverse backgrounds, with a number of them seconded from the UK campus.
When it comes to the teaching approach, NUMed believes that an integrated medical degree is the way to go. “The university uses an integrated case-led teaching approach that focuses on looking at patients holistically,” says Dr Ong.
The MBBS programme is approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and recognised across a range of professional bodies including the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK, the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), the Pakistan Medical Commission, the Medical Council of Thailand, the Maldives Medical and Dental Council, and the Mauritius Higher Education Commission.
NUMed chief operating officer Premila Nair also points out that medical students can get a dose of international exposure, if they choose to.
“While all five years of the programme are delivered in Malaysia, students will have the option of studying at the UK campus for up to eight weeks during their fourth year, or for an extra year to obtain their intercalated research qualification at either Bachelors or Masters level,” she said.
However, NUMed’s quest for producing the best and brightest in the field doesn’t stop there.
The university also offers a highly sought-after 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences degree programme, as well as a Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences – a pre-undergraduate programme that will set students on the right path if they want to pursue a career in medicine, primarily in MBBS or Biomedical Sciences.
NUMed’s On-Campus Open Day that will take place on Aug 19 would be an opportunity for prospective students to learn more about the university’s prestigious medical programmes, and glean valuable insights from the university’s alumni and students who will be there to share their experiences.
