Students enrolled in the 2 + 1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme will spend their final year of study in the UK.

Meanwhile, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students have the option to participate in an exchange programme or complete their intercalated coursework at the UK campus before finishing their studies in Malaysia.

During their study period at the UK campus, MBBS students will have the opportunity to focus on a research project, supervised by members of the UK and Malaysia faculties.

“This allows students to gain research experience and study alongside world-class researchers,” remarks NUMed Assoc Prof and Consultant Physician Dr Edmund Ong.

The Master in Research is awarded as an intercalated degree upon completion before students continue with their clinical studies.

“Over the past five years, 12 NUMed students have had the opportunity to conduct research projects in cancer, transplantation, neuroscience, public health, and education,” Dr Ong added.

Newcastle University’s Medical School in the UK encompasses a world-leading collaboration of research scientists, medical doctors, and teaching professionals with a reputation for innovation and excellence for both research and teaching.

The university’s research covers a variety of disciplines, including ageing, genetic medicine, molecular biosciences, and neurosciences, all of which have actively contributed to the wellbeing of the surrounding community.

According to Dr Roshan Mascarenhas, NUMed Assoc Prof and assistant dean of Biomedical Sciences, students are also able to work with experts from different institutions or countries.

Most of the grants are international, allowing research fellows to collaborate with other experts in Malaysia and around the world, providing in-depth learning opportunities with these experts during projects.

“These research experiences foster international and multidisciplinary collaborations, leading to a broader professional network as students start establishing a wide academic and research network early on,” Dr Roshan further added.
