IN today’s ever-evolving global landscape, the role of organisations extends far beyond profit margins and market share.
Now more than ever, companies are expected to operate as responsible stewards, considering the impact of their actions on the planet and society, with the escalating challenges posed by environmental, social and governance (ESG) concerns.
In light of this paradigm shift, Berjaya Sompo Insurance Bhd has officially launched The Good Policy campaign to safeguard its customers and the future of Malaysia by addressing ESG challenges through a spectrum of innovative initiatives.
Driven by the company’s vision “We Are Here With You” and mission “Insurance Made Easy For You”, the campaign aims to inspire positive change and promote a brighter future for our country.
Berjaya Sompo is dedicated to spearheading initiatives and programmes aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Specifically, the company has chosen to champion SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These efforts aim to address environmental concerns, promote social well-being and uphold strong governance practices.
“We believe that a responsible insurance provider should go beyond the conventional and actively contribute to the betterment of the communities it serves,” says Berjaya Sompo chief executive officer Tan Sek Kee.
“The Good Policy campaign is a testament to our dedication to positive change and it demonstrates our commitment to improving the lives of those in need.”
As part of the campaign, Berjaya Sompo is introducing The Good Bengkel programme which aims to promote inclusivity and empower individuals to enjoy safe driving in a well-maintained car.
As part of the programme, Berjaya Sompo offers to subsidise RM250 for car repairs for underprivileged individuals in the B40 segment, who often face financial difficulties in properly maintaining their vehicles.
Environmental
One of the initiatives carried out by Berjaya Sompo was a windscreen repair roadshow for its customers and the public, to raise awareness on the environmental issues of windscreen waste and to promote windscreen repair.
The company is also offering EV coverage with several partners. Along with its bancassurance partner, CIMB, Berjaya Sompo offers the first-in-market complimentary EV coverage with Secure Motor, available for both new and used EVs (up to eight years old) financed by CIMB auto financing. A similar package has also been extended to Mazda EV car owners.
Apart from that, Berjaya Sompo has conducted a number of initiatives aimed at flood mitigation and preparedness, in line with the occurrence of flash floods over the past few years.
One of these initiatives was the River Slope Mitigation programme, which saw over 730 trees planted at the Gombak River Slope at Kampung Batu 12 in Selangor.
By planting trees to protect water resources at the Klang River Basin, the company hopes to reduce potential riverbank erosion and landslides, as well as to increase the biodiversity of the area with multiple species of flora being planted.
Social
From a social standpoint, Berjaya Sompo actively participates in various social initiatives such as volunteering for Yayasan Generasi Gemilang’s programmes.
Berjaya Sompo’s commitment to fostering excellence in education is exemplified by its BSIB Rising Star Scholarship Programme, which offers up to RM20,000 per annum (per person) to support students who demonstrate exceptional talent, ambition and potential.
In addition, the company has also launched numerous initiatives at promoting road safety such as the Bantuan Car Seat campaign and Balik Kampung Vehicle Inspection campaign, to name a few.
The Bantuan Car Seat campaign saw Berjaya Sompo giving out child safety seats to 30 families in need, while the Balik Kampung Vehicle Inspection campaign assisted vehicle owners in checking their vehicles before they travelled back home for the holidays during Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Berjaya Sompo is also actively supporting Sompo Japan’s philanthropic arm, the Sompo Welfare Foundation by nominating organisations that aim to equip the underprivileged with necessary skills to be self-sufficient.
The foundation has financially aided multiple social welfare organisations such as Seven Tea One and Silent Teddies Bakery, for their continuous effort in providing training and employment opportunities to persons with disabilities (PWD).
Furthermore, the Sompo Welfare Foundation has also contributed to the Malaysian Down Syndrome Association (PSDM) for the Assisted Living Training Programme (ALIT), which will kickstart the renovation of the current vocational building at the PSDM building in Kuala Lumpur.
Governance
In December last year, Berjaya Sompo established the Sustainability Framework to deliver on its purpose and positively contribute to the economies and communities in which it operates.
The company also approved the revision of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework to integrate material risk considerations associated with sustainability or ESG into the enterprise-wide risk management process.
Both are to assist Berjaya Sompo in driving performance, identifying opportunities and managing risks across the areas of sustainability that are most important to its business and stakeholders, including current and emerging ESG aspects.
