Uni-Charm’s MamyPoko teams up with MBPJ in dengue prevention efforts

The #MamyPokoAgainstDengue campaign saw Uni-Charm Malaysia staff team up with the Petaling Jaya City Council and Petaling Health District Office for a gotong-royong initiative for mosquito larvae breeding areas at Medan 32 flats in Petaling Jaya.

IN conjunction with Asean Dengue Day and PJ City’s 18th-anniversary celebrations, MamyPoko has collaborated with Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to spearhead a gotong-royong initiative for mosquito larvae breeding areas at Medan 32 flats in Petaling Jaya – a known dengue hotspot.

This initiative is part of the brand’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity, dubbed the #MamyPokoAgainstDengue campaign, which was actively rolled out last year alongside the launch of the world’s first MamyPoko Antimos Pants diapers in Malaysia.

This anti-dengue cleanup programme, in line with MBPJ’s 18th-anniversary celebration theme, emphasises keeping Petaling Jaya clean and safe.

The event was graced by Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon, who supported the initiative and expressed his delight with the partnership forged for the campaign.

He commended all participants for their effort and dedication to public health, as well as efforts to raise awareness and curb the rise of dengue cases.

“We have seen dengue cases rise from 1,458 in 2021 to 5,641 in 2023, which is a 286% increase,” said Mohamad Zahri at the event.

“In week 24 of 2024, 134 cases were recorded, bringing the cumulative total to 3,838 cases. This is a slight improvement from the previous week, but the situation remains critical with 73 outbreak localities and 15 hotspots.

“I hope other private companies will work with MBPJ to improve Petaling Jaya, not just in dengue prevention but in other efforts as well.”

The anti-dengue cleanup programme began with an energetic Japanese “Taiso” exercise led by 57 Uni-Charm Malaysia employees, along with 23 volunteers from MBPJ and the Petaling Health District Office (PKD Petaling).

They then rolled up their sleeves and proceeded to clean up and destroy larvae breeding areas in the surrounding compound of Medan 32.

Residents of Medan 32 and Taman Medan Baru were even invited to attend anti-dengue talks by PKD Petaling and MamyPoko. MamyPoko Antimos Pants were also distributed to residents in dengue hotspots, to help repel mosquitoes from their babies and toddlers.

“MamyPoko organises #MamyPokoAgainstDengue campaign annually through cleanup efforts, awareness programmes and the distribution of MamyPoko Antimos Pants to deserving communities. With the rise in dengue cases across Malaysia, we are particularly concerned about the health of our little ones,” said Uni-Charm Corporation group managing director of Malaysia and Singapore Toru Fujita.

“We aim to collaborate with relevant organisations to create awareness and encourage communities to take precautions and actions to prevent dengue.

“As part of Uni-Charm’s ‘Necessities of Life with Activities (NOLA) and Dreams of Life with Activities (DOLA)’ philosophy, our dream is to provide worry-free dengue environments for our babies, and we hope that today’s and future activities will help make this dream come true.

“We are pleased to collaborate with MBPJ this year and contribute to keeping Petaling Jaya clean and safe from dengue. Our office is located in Petaling Jaya, so we feel a strong responsibility to contribute to our neighbourhood, where dengue cases remain high.”

The collaboration between Uni-Charm Malaysia, MBPJ, PKD Petaling and Medan 32 residents demonstrates a shared commitment to enhancing community health and safety.

Through these combined efforts, both MBPJ and Uni-Charm Malaysia aim to inspire more residents in dengue hotspot areas to take proactive steps in maintaining a cleaner environment and preventing the spread of dengue.
