Taylor’s College nurtures high-achievers to academic excellence
INSTITUTES of higher education have long been recognised as pivotal stepping stones in the journey toward academic and professional success.
Beyond traditional classroom settings, colleges offer a holistic environment that fosters personal growth, critical thinking and professional development, preparing students to meet the challenges of the modern workforce with confidence and competence.
A college education is more than just a gateway to a degree – it is an incubator for innovation, creativity and leadership.
Since its establishment in 1969, Taylor’s College has exemplified this philosophy, contributing to the nation’s educational landscape for over five decades.
Central to its mission, Taylor’s College aims to equip students with the necessary capabilities to excel in their educational journey, transition seamlessly to university and succeed in their future careers.
Striving for excellence
One example of this mission in action is Taylor’s College Foundation in Design graduate Nicole Kiew Ting Yi, who – despite facing personal difficulties – received the Best Student award in the programme.
“After my mother passed away and having to drop out of my previous universities due to financial constraints, I worked for four years to save enough money to complete my studies. These life experiences ultimately helped me become a better student,” she says.
Kiew, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Design in Creative Media at Taylor’s University, credits the supportive and inclusive environment at Taylor’s College for her overall growth during her studies.
“I am a scholarship recipient of Taylor's University Merit Scholarship 2024. Honestly, I have no idea where I would be if I didn't have scholarships to aid me. I am truly grateful for Taylor's scholarships that are available to students like me,” she says.
“I have fostered great relationships with my lecturers, which has made the crazy transition from school to university smoother and more manageable.
“My lecturers are very transparent when they share feedback, as they give constructive criticism to me to achieve better results.
“I was also very close to my programme director, who inspired and motivated me to be a better designer every day when completing my foundation.”
She adds that the facilities and resources available at Taylor’s also played a crucial role in her development.
Taylor’s University’s BizPod entrepreneur startup incubator was particularly beneficial during her educational journey at the institution, as it broadened her perspective on what to do after completing her degree.
“I wouldn’t know where to begin to achieve some of my craziest dreams if it weren’t for BizPod. They have some of the most driven people to help aspiring entrepreneurs and incubates. The resources they provide are tools every student should have,” says Kiew.
“One of my dreams is to be a founder of my own business and BizPod has been a launchpad for me, allowing me to jump higher and higher as I go.”
BizPod empowers and guides students from the ideation stage to successful full-fledged startups via a dynamic ecosystem of venture capitalists, mentors, entrepreneur coaches, university members and the institution’s multidisciplinary collaborative platform – Taylor’s Makerspace.
After bagging an RM2,000 grant via the BizPod’s Mini Accelerator Programme: Travel Tech Edition earlier this year, Kiew’s business startup team secured another RM10,000 from BizPod Grant and have been paired with The Walt Disney Company’s head of games Jê Alipio for a six-month mentorship programme, furthering opportunities for growth and learning.
They are preparing to launch their company, which will enter the tourism industry.
Stepping stone to success
Another top achiever from Taylor’s College is Cambridge A-Level graduate Victor Ngow, who will be continuing his education at Harvard University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) Economics.
At Taylor’s College, he took Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Physics, but his passion for Economics shone through.
Victor’s suggestion: “At Harvard, I plan to concentrate in Economics because not only do I enjoy it but see it as a way to broaden my understanding of global issues and hopefully one day help me contribute to positive societal impact,” Says Ngow.
“I have come to realise that I want to combine STEM and Humanities, which the US education system allows me to do by mixing and matching my subjects to my interests”
Ngow shares that his acceptance into Harvard was influenced not just by his academic prowess, but also by his active involvement in extracurricular activities.
He explains that his well-rounded profile, supported by recommendations from his lecturers, made him a standout candidate.
“Academically speaking, I know many other students who achieved better results than myself. I think extracurricular involvement was a main strength of my application, as I joined many clubs and activities in school and at Taylor’s College, where I had many leadership opportunities,” he says.
Ngow was a proactive student at Taylor’s College, with active participation in the Rotaract and Taekwondo Clubs, serving as the equity officer and treasurer of the Taylor’s Debate Club for one term and acting as an emcee at various in-house and external events.
He opines that the support provided by Taylor’s College’s University Placement Services department also played a significant role in helping him get into Harvard.
“They helped me with all the paperwork and understanding how to answer the various forms and questions. They also guided me on the documents and transcripts needed and were always available to help me,” says Ngow.
“They also shared talks or events to help me understand the pre-departure procedure and American culture so that I can properly assimilate once I’m there.”
