THE Allianz EV Shield insurance coverage solution for electric cars (EVs) under the Private Car Comprehensive policy features an industry-first coverage of on-the-go charging, allaying concerns among car owners for stalled EVs out of charge.
The on-the-go charging service for stranded EVs pilots in the Klang Valley, where the Allianz EV Rangers can provide a 15-minute on-the-spot fast charge, for a 50km travel range to the nearest charging facility.
Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Bhd deputy chief sales officer Sazali Abd Rahman says the mobile EV charger is a collaboration with Petronas-owned clean energy company Gentari. “This is part of Allianz Malaysia’s best-in-class roadside assistance,” he noted.
Sazali said since Allianz EV Shield was launched in February 2024 until June 30 2024, the Allianz EV Rangers had to rescue two stranded EVs.
“Maybe in the years to come, with more ageing EVs on the road, and depending on the state-of-health (SoH) of the EV battery, there will be more cases of stranded EVs,” he says.
Sazali pointed out that Allianz EV Shield also offers five major benefits, at no extra cost:
> Up to RM15,000 coverage for EV Home Wall Charger against fire, lightning, theft or natural disasters,
> Up to RM2,000 coverage for loss or damage to the Portable Charging Cable due to fire, theft, accidental collision and overturning
> Up to RM5,000 Compassionate Cover for damage or injury while using public EV Chargers
> 24 Hours Towing to the nearest charging stations or home if your vehicle is out of charge - Up to RM50,000 Personal Liability Coverage for death or bodily injury to third party, or damage to third party property arising from the use of EV Home Wall Charger
Sazali says Allianz EV Shield was introduced in response to the rapid adoption of EVs in the country. “Sales of EVs have jumped tremendously in the past two years,” he noted.
The Star recently reported that sales of EVs in the country have more than doubled in the first six months of this year to over 10,000 units, compared with the same period last year.
Based on figures by the Statistics Department, 10,663 EVs were sold as of June 30, compared with 4,409 EVs in the same period last year.
A total of 13,301 EVs were sold in 2023. Among the reasons for the increase were the competitive prices offered by certain EV manufacturers, along with several incentives announced by the government.
Under the revised Budget 2023, duty exemptions for fully imported and locally-assembled EVs are extended till end-2025 and end-2027 respectively.
Based on the data, BYD continues to dominate the EV market here with the number of registered EVs increasing from 1,836 units last year to 4,368 units in the first six months of this year, or a 137.9% jump.
While Tesla is just behind BYD, sales of Tesla EVs skyrocketed by nearly 17 times, from 174 units for 2023 to 3,079 units in the first six months of 2024.
EV sales of other brands in the same period include BMW (807), Chery (406), Hyundai (147), Great Wall (272), Mercedes-Benz (323), Smart (282) and Neta (100).
Sazali says Allianz EV Shield provides peace of mind to the company’s customers.
“There are no hidden costs or underlying conditions. The moment you buy an EV, and an Allianz motor insurance policy, you get the benefits of Allianz EV Shield,” he says.
Also, in the unfortunate event of an accident, the Allianz Road Rangers will provide roadside assistance and customers will not be forced to endure intimidation by touts who insist on bringing their vehicles to questionable workshops.
