THE demand for skilled accountants has never been higher.

To meet this need, universities seek to offer innovative pathways that equip students with essential knowledge and fast-track their careers.

The University of Reading Malaysia’s (UoRM) Henley Business School is one such institution that aims to aid accounting students in their educational and professional journeys, by securing more professional pathways for its students.

UoRM recently signed an agreement with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) to provide students and graduates with a fast-track route to earn two global professional designations – Associate Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).

Both these designations are offered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and CIMA, which are jointly known as the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants.

Students who choose the AICPA & CIMA pathway will be able to enrol in the CGMA Finance Leadership Programme (CGMA FLP) simultaneously with their degree.

By the time students graduate, they will have already completed the CGMA FLP and will have the opportunity to earn two global professional designations.

The ACMA designation is subject to a three-year relevant work experience requirement. Students and graduates who achieve the ACMA designation will simultaneously be awarded with the CGMA designation.

An added benefit is that the one-year placement as part of the AICPA & CIMA pathway will count towards the three-year work experience requirement.

Additionally, another interesting feature of UoRM and CIMA’s agreement is the CGMA A-Star Programme, which allows final-year students and recent graduates (within five years of graduation) to register under the programme.

Under this arrangement, candidates will only sit for one Strategy Case Study (SCS) exam.
