IN THE vibrant heart of Malaysia’s education landscape, a new chapter is unfolding at University of Cyberjaya (UoC).

The appointment of Prof Dr David Whitford as vice-chancellor heralds a fresh era of innovation and growth. With an impressive track record and forward-thinking vision, Prof Whitford is poised to lead the university to new heights.

Prof Whitford graduated in medicine from Cambridge University and Newcastle University in the UK. Following vocational training in general practice, he worked as a family physician for 16 years in Newcastle upon Tyne, establishing a practice at the forefront of quality medical care.

He was awarded a fellowship from the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1996 and a doctorate from Cambridge University in 2003.

“The area I really believe in, in terms of vision for the university, is that we have to be very innovative in the way that we’re thinking,” says Prof Whitford, underscoring the importance of adapting to the rapidly evolving educational landscape.

He strives to motivate the institution’s educators to encourage students to think critically, challenge notions, ask more questions and aim for excellence.

These efforts are in line with the university’s passion for unleashing changemakers and producing graduates who can become proactive agents of change.

Prof Whitford believes that the university needs to be transformational, as it is imperative that students know that they have the power to change society and have an influence on the people around them.

He is also an advocate of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the university’s curriculum.

“At the moment, our programmes such as Psychology and Biomedical Engineering Technology have introduced generative AI in their curricula. I’m looking to ensure that this is done university-wide with all programmes.

“The reality is that generative AI can be used constructively with students to challenge them. When used correctly, it can be transformative for education as it can be used to tutor students,” he says.

Prof Whitford adds that students should also be aiming to cultivate soft skills, as that is what truly helps with career progression.

“I’m working with our deans here to build stronger programmes that build students’ soft skills. These include leadership training, resilience training, critical thinking, communication skills, teamwork and more. These interpersonal skills are what people are looking for in the industry,” he says.

“I look forward to bringing some new changes for the betterment of the university but what I’m most drawn to about UoC is its highly motivated staff.

“We also have great alumni out there paving the way for greatness because of our quality programmes. Also, not forgetting our state-of-the-art facilities and student life.”

As Prof Whitford takes the helm at UoC, there is a palpable sense of excitement and optimism on campus.

His vision for a forward-thinking, research-driven and community-focused university is set to guide the institution into a new era of growth.
