Tackling iron deficiency anaemia in Malaysian children

IRON deficiency anaemia (IDA) in children is a significant global health concern that often goes unnoticed until it severely impacts a child’s growth and development.

This condition can lead to a range of physical and cognitive issues as iron is a crucial element for children’s development, playing an essential role in producing healthy red blood cells, oxygen transportation, energy production and overall cellular function.

As children grow, their iron needs increase, making them particularly vulnerable to deficiency.

If left untreated, IDA can severely affect a child’s physical and cognitive development, and negatively impact their immune system, making them more susceptible to illness and infection.

According to a study* conducted by Danone Specialized Nutrition (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and researchers from Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, it was found that one in three Malaysian children under age three was at risk of anaemia.

The study, which involved 1,201 children, was the first large-scale clinical study in the country, which sought to improve the understanding and awareness of the prevalence of anaemia among young children.

The World Health Organization also regards IDA as a major health concern among children.

As a trusted brand for over six decades, Dugro has been re-formulated with Iron Active since 2021. This new formulation contains a combination of iron and vitamin C which aid in absorption, along with other essential nutrients including DHA and calcium, as well as 21 vitamins and minerals to support development.

In light of this, Danone Specialized Nutrition Malaysia, under the Dugro brand, introduced its IDA public awareness campaign last year to tackle IDA among Malaysian children, in a bid to create an “Iron-Strong Generation”.

This year, the company is launching the second iteration of the IDA public awareness campaign, as it aims to ensure that Malaysian parents and caregivers are well informed about the risks and consequences of IDA on a child’s overall growth and development.

As part of this year’s campaign, Dugro will also be organising a free anaemia screening for children. Visit Dugro roadshow to find out more.

Moreover, for those unable to attend the roadshow in person, Dugro offers an online screening tool, the Iron Strong Screening Questionnaire, available on their website. This questionnaire, comprising seven food intake-related questions, helps to identify the risk of IDA among children.
