FROM end 2021 to early 2022, the country experienced one of the worst flooding, one that was brought on by a combination of factors, largely caused by a tropical cyclone that touched down at the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

It caused a panic as the torrential rain quickly resulted in floods across eight states in Peninsular Malaysia, with casualties that included 54 dead and two missing.

It ruined the homes of some 71,000 residents effectively turning them into evacuees over that time period and affected over 125,000.

Since then, the country is much better prepared to handle the flooding situation across the nation, although the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) still issues regular warnings of thunderstorms during the monsoon seasons that could potentially cause flooding episodes.

However, it is also during this time that we see the best in human nature as many have come forward to lend a helping hand, either through their own effort or by contributions.

As the “Best Life Solution Company”, Coway is stepping forward to support communities impacted by the recent flash floods with a donation of RM300,000.

This contribution is part of the company’s commitment of giving back to the community and fostering resilience in times of need.

It has collaborated with the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) in its commitment towards providing immediate relief and assistance to those affected by the devastating floods, which have severely impacted areas such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and beyond.

Approximately 40,000 households – equivalent to 137,000 individuals – have been directly affected, highlighting the urgency for coordinated recovery efforts.

Coway’s long-standing commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) is at the heart of this initiative, reflecting its core value of caring for people.

The relief efforts will extend to 45 community centres in the affected areas, offering vital resources and support to help families and local communities recover.

This effort is further strengthened through a collaboration with MRC – a humanitarian organisation known for its expertise in disaster relief – to ensure the aid reaches those in greatest need.

Through this partnership, the donation will provide essential relief items, including food, hygiene products and cleaning supplies, such as high-pressure water jets, mops, disinfectants and floor scrubbers to assist families in restoring their homes and surroundings.

With MRC’s extensive experience in disaster management and its established network of volunteers across Malaysia, the partnership will ensure that the donation is utilised effectively, providing immediate support such as essential supplies, shelter, and other forms of aid to flood-affected communities.

Coway Malaysia chief executive officer Kyle Choi said, “The well-being of Malaysians is at the heart of what we do.

“We strive to enhance lives with our products, but equally, we believe in being a pillar of support during times of crisis.

“The flash floods have deeply affected countless lives, and we hope this contribution, in collaboration with the Malaysian Red Crescent, will help ease the burden and bring much-needed comfort to all families affected out there.”

As Malaysia works to recover from the devastation of the flash floods, Coway will continue to collaborate with trusted partners and extend its efforts to provide aid and relief wherever it is most needed.

Through this ongoing commitment, Coway aims to be a source of strength and hope for all Malaysians.

Malaysia is currently experiencing the north-east monsoon which is expected to last until March next year, all government agencies are on standby, with personnel and assets ready to be deployed at any time.

During this interim, with still memories of what happened in 2022, government agencies are prepared to not only handle floods, but also soil movement incidents such as landslides.

For those who own a Coway unit who were affected by the flood, the company has informed that although its services are temporarily interrupted until further notice, the company aims to resume its services as soon as possible.

Coway owners are advised to switch off and unplug their Coway products immediately at the first sign of flood waters entering their homes, and to move the products to a higher level.

For customers whose Coway products were damaged by the flood, the company will find the best solution to assist.
