With iOS 11, Apple introduced a tool to iPhone and iPad users that allows them to write on, mark and cover text in PDF files and photos.

Markup also lets users highlight and paint over text passages and handwritten notes, and yet it's not quite suitable for concealing sensitive data in documents meant to be shared.

Users should take care if they want to use it to black out sensitive information, be it bank details or personal information, warns Apple news blog 9to5mac.com.

This is because the tool only blacks out an area opaquely after it's used multiple times, leaving the text underneath legible. Another thing to keep in mind is that this kind of blackening can often be removed using image processing programs.

Apple itself advertises the tool only as for annotation purposes or digital signatures. — dpa
