Microsoft has announced a new version of Skype for desktops. Version 8.0 of the video chat and messaging program looks largely like the previous version but offers plenty of new features.
The update allows you to make video calls in HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) if you have a webcam that can achieve this resolution, as well as to hold calls and share your screen with up to 24 other users at the same time.
You're now also be able to share up to 300 MB of photos, videos and other files at a time by dragging them into the chat window.
The latest version will let you directly mention someone in a group chat by putting the @ symbol in front of their name, like in WhatsApp. In addition, a new chat media gallery makes it easier to find files, links and photos that were shared in conversations.
Skype 8.0 will replace all previous versions so users will have to upgrade to it by Sept 1 this year if they want to continue to use the program.
Microsoft has said other features will be rolled out in the coming months, including read receipts, private conversations that are encrypted end-to-end and the ability to record calls.
To upgrade to Skype 8.0, users can visit www.skype.com and download it there or else navigate to Help > Check for Updates within the app. — dpa
