US President Donald Trump on May 27 threatened to regulate or shut down social media companies, a day after Twitter Inc for the first time added a fact-checking label to some of his tweets about mail-in ballots.

The regulation of big technology companies including Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google has been a hot button issue ahead of the US presidential election on Nov 3.
