PETALING JAYA: Initial investigations by the Communications and Digital Ministry revealed that the Maybank account numbers in the allegedly leaked database may be invalid or don’t exist.

According to a media statement, no transactions could be conducted via the account numbers.

The ministry's early findings also uncovered the possibility that the claimed leak may refer to an earlier incident in 2018.

However, official confirmation from the relevant parties will still be required for an in-depth investigation under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) Act 709.

The statement also said that matters regarding the alleged Election Commission (EC) data leak will be handed over to the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) as they are not covered by the PDPA.

A notice has been issued to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block the website that the database is being sold on.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil reminded users to always ensure a good level of cybersecurity and to always abide by the principles and standards of data protection in accordance with Act 709.
