Having become a big believer in foldables, I came into this review with high expectations, which the Find N2 Flip met and even exceeded.
The compact clamshell design reminiscent of a more retro flip phone has always been the unique selling point for a device like this, and Oppo has found a way to improve on the formula.
Open-and-shut case
The Find N2 Flip’s hinge is probably the smoothest on the market, making for a very satisfying feeling when opening and closing the device.
The crease that’s characteristically present on foldable devices is almost gone – some may even mistake the device for a traditional slab smartphone when open.
On the flip side (pun intended), the standing angle is limited to just between 45° and 110°.
When folded, it seems to have about the same form factor as other devices in the category, but in truth, it is actually a tiny bit wider.
That extra bit of width translates to more screen real estate, which makes a bigger difference in use than you’d expect.
Its 21:9 aspect ratio makes it a good fit for watching ultrawide content like movies and online videos, and its vibrant colours and deep blacks elevate the experience.
But no review of a foldable is complete without addressing the extra screen.
The humongous 3.26in cover screen is a big plus, especially for shutterbugs who want to take selfies or group photos while using it as a preview.
With the 17:9 aspect ratio on the outer display being closer to a standard size, previews only suffer from a little bit of cropping.
It also happens to be a real eye-catcher, as I’ve had loads of people ask about it.
On the audio side of things, the Find N2 Flip delivers stereo sound through a bottom-firing speaker and a boosted earpiece speaker.
It can get quite loud when the volume is cranked up, though with a bit of distortion at max volume.
It is worth noting that it supports Dolby Atmos, which adds another layer of immersion when consuming content.
Under the hood
Oppo has been heavily promoting the Hasselblad-tuned camera setup, comprising a 50-megapixel main shooter and an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, and this is warranted.
Pictures taken with the device are crisp and clean (especially in Hi-Res Mode), while also maintaining very vivid colours.
The option to take videos and pictures hands-free with the device standing on its own while partially folded was also handy.
On the front is the 32-megapixel wide-angle selfie holepunch camera, which, similarly, is a great performer.
The truly outstanding part of the selfie camera is the sheer speed at which it unlocks the phone using face recognition.
Another neat feature is the ability to unlock the Find N2 Flip using the main cameras while the phone is folded.
This allows you to access widgets for the camera, earphones, weather, timer, voice recorder and events without unfolding the screen.
Here’s hoping that Oppo adds support for standard apps on the cover screen down the line, otherwise it would be a wasted opportunity.
The device is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chip, which was able to handle anything thrown at it, while keeping things snappy and responsive.
In the time I was using the device, battery life was never really a problem, with it easily handling Waze, Spotify, YouTube and some light social media browsing throughout the day.
Oppo claims that with its support for 44-watt fast charging, the 4,300mAh battery goes from almost zero to 50% in 23 minutes, and to full capacity in an hour, which in my experience was about right.
Unlike some phones, the Find N2 Flip comes bundled with a beefy charger alongside a USB type-C to type-A cable.
It would have been better if the included cable was USB-C to USB-C, as the data migration process from an older phone required such a cable.
Granted, this is just a minor gripe, as the option of doing it wirelessly was also available, albeit at a slower speed.
Also, the charger supports 67-watt fast charging, making it ideal for next-generation phones that can take advantage of the higher wattage.
Sleek contender
Oppo’s Find N2 Flip comes in two flavours – Astral Black and Moonlit Purple – and is a powerful, feature-packed device.
For anyone who’s been on the fence about getting a foldable device, this smartphone might just change your mind.
In Malaysia, the device is priced at RM3,999 and comes with 256GB of storage and 8GB RAM.
