A man was found dead more than a year after he vanished after leaving an Uber in California, according to police and the man’s company.

The remains of Beau Mann, 39, were found in the “courtyard of an abandoned property” in Santa Monica on April 25, the Santa Monica Police Department said in a May 8 news release.

Beau was a beautiful soul who spent the better part of his life helping others,” his family wrote on Facebook. “We miss his infectious smile and positive attitude every day.”

Mann’s fiance remembered him as “wonderful,” NBC4 reported.

Mann was the founder and CEO of Sober Grid, an app meant to provide “an online sober community” and resources for those recovering from addiction, according to the company’s website.

Mann texted 911 as he rode in an Uber on Nov 30, 2021, before he was dropped off in Santa Monica, Sober Grid wrote in a May 8 Instagram post. His remains were found about a mile from where his Uber dropped him off.

In an email to McClatchy News on May 9, Uber said there was no incident report filed about Mann’s trip and that the driver immediately picked up another rider.

Jill Calhoun with the Los Angeles Police Department told NBC News in May 2022 that police received Mann’s 911 text, but he never responded to attempts to reach him.

After suffering from addiction, Mann turned his drive “towards helping others” and created Sober Grid in 2015, according to his company.

“Simply put – Beau was our light,” the company said. “His bright smile and endless energy and compassion will be missed.”

Mann’s cause of death hasn’t been determined, police said. – The Charlotte Observer/Tribune News Service
