A father in eastern China who bought a 15 yuan (RM9.67 or US$2) bag of clams and buried them on a beach for his daughters to dig up as a game has delighted mainland social media.

According to Shandong TV, the father took a bag of clams hidden in a backpack and buried them along a beach in eastern China’s Shandong province on June 27. The scene was captured in a video posted online.

His two small daughters were close-by playing on the beach with a net and a shovel and soon found the buried clams, then excitedly presented their “trophies” to him.

The 10-second video clip has gone viral in China, with 9 million views on Weibo and 7 million on Douyin. Many people praised the father for creating a fun game for his daughters.

Another said: “The father spent 15 yuan to buy one happy afternoon for his two daughters.”

A third online observer said: “When the girls grow up, they will recall that they went to the seaside with their father during their childhood and the beach was full of clams. A qualified parent can bring their kids the happiest childhood memories.”

An anonymous mother commented on Douyin: “Years ago, we raised several quails at home, and my son hoped they would lay eggs. So I bought some quail eggs from the market and secretly placed them in the nest. I still remember my son was thrilled when finding the eggs in the nest. He really thought the quail had laid them.”

Heartwarming stories of parents and their children often attract attention on mainland social media.

Last month, a five-year-old girl in eastern China’s Jiangsu province who played at being a doctor and doing “medical check-ups” on her pet dog and family members with tools made by her father went viral on social media.

Also, a mother in southern China who turned old cardboard boxes into toys, including a giant playhouse, a castle and a Transformer car for her three daughters, won applause online in March. – South China Morning Post
