The story of a woman in China, whose puzzlement over why her toy rubber ducks kept vanishing was cleared up after she took her pet bulldog for a CT scan, has sparked hilarity and discussion on mainland social media.

The owner of the dog, from Shanghai, surnamed Liu, told Star Video that she often received small rubber ducks as complimentary gifts and gave them to her dog to play with.

“However, they seemed to vanish suddenly. Given that some other toys had also mysteriously disappeared before, I began to suspect that the dog might have swallowed them,” said Liu.

A CT scan confirmed her suspicions and the pet owner immediately opted to have surgery performed on her dog.

When the canine was opened up vets were astonished to discover 11 rubber ducks inside its stomach.

“I thought there were only five when I saw the CT scan and was flabbergasted when they found more than twice that number,” said Liu.

Post-surgery images revealed that a number of the rubber ducks have retained their original shape and bright yellow colour.

The bulldog has made a full recovery from the operation which cost around 8,000 yuan (US$1,100).

The story has resonated with pet owners on mainland social media.

One online observer said: “This pet is just like my silly dog at home.”

Many praised Liu for her love of the dog and for being prepared to fork out so much money on the operation: “The owner is very generous when it comes to her dog!” said one person.

Some speculated that the ducks were freebies given away by a lemon tea brand and joked: “Remember to keep the little ducks out of reach after finishing your lemon tea.”

It is not the first time such a story has caught the attention of social media.

In July 2021, a dog experienced hallucinations and began biting at an imaginary bone after licking toxic wild mushrooms accidentally dropped on the floor by its owner, Star Video reported. – South China Morning Post
